Worlds First Titanium Supercar

Last year, a brand new Italian-Chinese car company known as Icona burst onto to the scene with a brand new concept supercar called the Icona Vulcano. You might remember the car from Top Gear as it was featured on the new section in season twenty. I, just like many of you dismissed the car as being nothing more than another concept car from an ambitious startup that wanted to make their mark in the supercar realm. But this time its different, as the company has revealed a fully functional pre-production prototype that will makes its debut in September on Salon Prive in the UK and it is being hailed as the worlds first titanium supercar.

The full titanium body is styled after the Blackbird SR-71 featuring very pronounced sharp lines all across the body and butterfly doors, they wanted to achieve a balance between power and beauty, which Iconas chief designer, Samuel Chuffart believes they have achieved; as he said,

The most challenging design issue which we faced was how to create a balance between power and beauty, if you make too much of the powerful features which are necessary to a super sports car, such as its cooling cutouts and blades which manage the air flow, they become graphically too dominant, and this makes the car less beautiful

Under the hood of the Volcano, lies a 6.2-litre supercharged V8 sourced from the Corvette ZR1 stock that produces 661bhp and 605lb ft but apparently the car can be tuned all the way to 1000bhp. 0-100Km/h; happens in 2.8 seconds and it can reach a top speed of 355km/h(220mph). Icona states the titanium supercar will be able to do a sub 7:20 lap time at the Nurburgring, putting it around the same pace as a Nissan GTR; not bad for their first supercar. But don’t worry, the interior hasn’t been forgotten as its festooned with the usual carbon fiber, leather and alcantara trims you would expect from a super car of this caliber. Along with that, it features a Tesla-like TFT instrument display that will allow you to control nearly every aspect of the car. The steering wheel steams to be taken straight from the Ferrari 458 and the buttons in the instrument cluster seam to be sourced from Ford.

Now you may be wondering what the price is for all this Titanium goodness? US$ 2,8 Million. At that price point it makes the Icona Vulcano more expensive than a Bugatti Chiron. Though apparently chief designer Samuel Chuffart thinks its worth it as the Titanium body alone takes 10,000 hours to craft. Still, its hard to justify that much money for a car with relatively similar performance to a Lamborghini Aventador or even a Ferrari F12.

    * Poetical indeed, talking about the “steering wheel steams” and “instrument cluster seams”.

    * BTW what will happen if the need for denting arises (assuming painting is not needed).

    * The car is expensive because titanium is expensive, not because of those 10,000 hours.

    * It is an all boys team, what about the diversity and feminism and other talks?

    * The front is beautiful, and the design language is retro, but the butt is ugly. The taillights look like a spider’s pincers. Ewww!

I thought the other way around… The side profiles alright but the frontals too much… The butts not bad, pincer or not, better than the front. The head lights should have extended into the fenders sides. Front reminds me of a Lexus LFA.
